April 1st, 2026 - Drones Flood U.K. Prisons With Contraband, Operating Like “Uber Eats” for Criminals

In the early hours of a quiet London night, a car pulled up outside Wormwood Scrubs Prison, and a small drone was launched into the sky. Within moments, it disappeared over the prison walls, carrying contraband meant for inmates, part of a growing and highly organized smuggling operation.

Authorities later identified the operator as Shafaghatullah Mohseni, who was convicted of leading a network responsible for dozens of illegal drone deliveries to prisons across England. These flights transported drugs, phones, weapons, and other banned items, turning drone smuggling into a profitable underground business fueled by demand from inside prison walls.

The scale of the problem has surged in recent years. Drone sightings in prisons across England and Wales have reached record levels, with thousands of incidents reported annually and experts believe the true number is even higher. The technology has made smuggling faster, more precise, and harder to stop than traditional methods.

Unlike older tactics such as throwing contraband over walls or relying on corrupt insiders, drones allow organized groups to deliver packages directly to specific prison locations. Inmates place orders through hidden phones, and items are delivered with surprising efficiency, sometimes compared by officials to a delivery service.

The consequences are serious. Officials say drone deliveries are fueling rising drug use, violence, and organized crime inside prisons. Some deliveries have even included dangerous weapons, raising concerns that more severe security threats, including potential escapes, could follow if the issue is not contained.

In response, authorities are racing to adapt. New measures include installing nets over prison yards, improving surveillance, and investing in technology designed to intercept drones. Law enforcement is also targeting the operators behind these networks, aiming to dismantle the organized crime groups driving the activity.

Despite these efforts, experts warn that the challenge is far from solved. Many prisons were built long before drones existed, leaving them vulnerable to attacks from above. As criminals continue to innovate, authorities face an ongoing battle to keep prisons secure in an increasingly high-tech world.
