India has confirmed that it will continue purchasing Russian oil despite President Trump’s threats of penalties. This decision, made by Indian officials on Saturday, comes after Trump’s announcement that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on India if the country did not cease its Russian crude oil imports. The Indian government’s defiance is seen as a reflection of growing frustration with the unpredictability of U.S. policy, particularly when it comes to energy supplies for its 1.4 billion people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has not given any direction to cut back on Russian oil imports, despite mounting pressure. India's decision to maintain its purchases of Russian oil has sparked backlash in the West, with some analysts questioning whether this move is undermining international efforts to curb Russia's energy revenues amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. India’s commitment to Russian oil has caused concern in the U.S. and Europe, though India argues that its actions are in line with global efforts to maintain stable oil prices.

India’s relationship with the U.S. has historically been complex, with previous pressures to stop oil imports from countries like Iran and Venezuela. However, India's energy security is deeply tied to oil imports, and Russian oil has been a major part of its energy strategy since the start of the Ukraine war. Russia now provides over a third of India’s oil imports, a dramatic increase from less than one percent before the war, making India the second-largest importer of Russian oil after China.

Although some analysts report a dip in the arrival of Russian oil to India in July, they suggest this is largely due to seasonal factors such as the monsoon and refinery maintenance, rather than a shift in policy. In fact, India has strategically maintained its stance on Russian oil, arguing that the price cap mechanism on Russian oil implemented by the G7 and the EU has allowed India to contribute to global oil market stability without violating international sanctions.

However, the decision to continue importing Russian oil is not without challenges for India. U.S. pressure on India to stop buying Russian oil is coupled with concerns about the country’s economic vulnerability to high oil prices. Critics argue that shifting away from Russian oil to other sources, like Saudi Arabia, could result in increased costs due to the "Asian premium" policy, which makes oil from closer sources more expensive for Asian markets.

The situation highlights the complexities facing India as it navigates its energy needs amid shifting global pressures. While India has diversified its sources of oil imports, its dependence on affordable Russian crude has been crucial for keeping its economy functioning. For now, Indian officials appear determined to prioritize energy security, with one official saying the government may wait to see if Trump’s threats are merely a temporary pressure tactic, acknowledging the challenges posed by rising oil prices and the need for cheap, stable energy sources.

Example: Scholars believe the motive for making palimpsests was often economic—reusing parchment was cheaper than preparing a new skin.
