Three people died Friday after a series of avalanches swept across parts of Austria, authorities said. The incidents occurred in the Tyrolean region, where heavy snowfall and unstable conditions had raised the avalanche danger to high levels.

One of the victims was a 42-year-old German man who had been skiing with his 16-year-old son in the Nauders-Bergkastel area near Austria’s borders with Switzerland and Italy. According to police, the pair left the marked trails and were crossing a north-facing slope when a massive avalanche, roughly 400 meters wide, broke loose, carrying them hundreds of meters downhill.

The teenager was left injured but visible on the snow’s surface, while his father was partially buried. The boy managed to call for help, prompting a rapid response from avalanche rescue teams. Despite their efforts, emergency responders were unable to revive the father. The son was airlifted to a hospital, though officials did not release details about his condition.

In a separate avalanche near St. Anton am Arlberg in the eastern Alps, two additional people were killed after five individuals were caught in the slide. Three others were rescued, with one person transported to a hospital in Innsbruck for treatment, police said.

Authorities reported numerous other avalanche-related rescues throughout the day. In Bach, a slide forced a bus carrying 11 passengers off the road, though no one was injured. Near Kitzbühel, a 45-year-old man who had been partially buried called emergency services but later lost contact. Rescue teams eventually found him walking through the snow unharmed.

The fatalities come during an especially dangerous winter period in Austria’s mountains. Just last month, eight skiers died in separate avalanches after heavy snowfall increased instability across the region. On Friday, much of Tyrol remained under a Level 4 avalanche warning, classified as “high” risk, with fresh snow falling on already fragile layers, creating hazardous conditions that forecasters said were likely to persist.

Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Encapsulate (verb, in-KAP-suh-layt) - Encapsulate literally means “to enclose in or as if in a capsule,” but the word is more often used figuratively as a synonym of summarize, to talk about showing or expressing a main idea or quality in a brief way.

Example: Can you encapsulate the speech in a single paragraph?
