A tragic crane accident in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of at least 32 people and injuries to 67 others, according to the Thai health ministry. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on a section of track northeast of Bangkok, where an elevated high-speed railway is currently under construction. The project, which is part of a broader initiative to create a rail network extending from Southeast Asia to China, was interrupted by this deadly mishap.
The train, Special Express Train No. 21, was carrying 195 passengers and crew members on its route between Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani when the crane fell onto the train. The crash occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, approximately halfway through the train’s journey. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand promised thorough investigations and potential punishment if any negligence was found.
Rescue efforts were underway late into the day as workers sifted through the wreckage, attempting to free those trapped in the debris. Local resident Nupih Pinta, 56, recalled the difficulty of assisting the victims, many of whom were trapped inside the train. Some survivors managed to walk out on their own, while others waited by the side of a dirt road for help.
According to Col. Thatchapon Chinnawongand, chief of the Sikhio police station, the crane fell from a height of approximately 65 feet. The company involved in the construction of the railway, Italian-Thai Development PCL, expressed their commitment to taking full responsibility for the incident. They also promised to offer compensation and medical care to the victims’ families while cooperating with local authorities.
The railway construction is part of a larger, China-backed high-speed rail project designed to connect Southeast Asia with China through Laos. The project is closely associated with China’s Belt and Road Initiative, an ambitious infrastructure plan to expand China’s influence across the region.
Chinese authorities have expressed concern over the incident, with a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that they were closely monitoring the situation. While the Thai companies are responsible for this section of the railway, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Last year, another China-backed construction project in Thailand also drew scrutiny after a building under construction in Bangkok collapsed during an earthquake, killing dozens of workers. This latest incident has reignited concerns about the safety of such projects in the country.
