Dozens of civilians were killed and several others abducted after armed attackers stormed two neighboring villages in northwestern Nigeria, according to government officials. The violence marked the first major assault on civilians since U.S. forces carried out airstrikes on Christmas Day, an action President Trump said was aimed at protecting Christian communities from Islamist militants.
Residents said the villages had been under siege for more than a week, forcing families to flee their homes and sleep in nearby bushes to avoid being targeted. Police officials reported that more than 30 people were killed in the village of Kasuwa Daji, with residents placing the death toll even higher. Additional victims were reported in the nearby village of Kaima.
Several people were also kidnapped during the attacks, though the exact number remains unclear. Some of those abducted were linked to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, a community that was still recovering from a mass kidnapping of students earlier this year. Local residents described the situation as desperate, with little to no security presence in the area.
Survivors said gunmen emerged repeatedly from surrounding forests, attacking at will. Community members pleaded for help, saying the absence of effective protection had left them exposed. Many families now avoid sleeping indoors, fearing abduction or death if attackers return.
No group has formally claimed responsibility, but Nigerian officials suggested the attackers may be militants fleeing recent U.S. airstrikes. Authorities said the strikes, carried out with Nigerian cooperation, targeted terrorist groups operating in the region after intelligence indicated threats to civilian populations, particularly Christians.
President Trump has defended the U.S. action as a firm response to extremist violence, emphasizing that America would not stand by while innocent civilians were targeted. While analysts continue to debate the broader security dynamics in Nigeria, local officials acknowledged that armed groups have exploited years of weak enforcement in rural areas.
For residents of Papiri and nearby villages, daily life remains defined by fear and uncertainty. Some communities have formed local patrols made up of young volunteers, but many say such efforts are no substitute for sustained security. Until stronger protection arrives, families say survival — not normal life — remains their priority.
