Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated into deadly clashes that entered their second day on Friday, with more than 100,000 people displaced as fighting continues over a long-standing border dispute. The violence, described as the most intense between the two nations in 14 years, has left at least a dozen civilians and six soldiers dead in Thailand, while Cambodia has reported at least one fatality. The clashes, which began on Thursday, have caused widespread panic, forcing thousands of people in both countries to flee their homes.

Thailand's acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, warned that the conflict "could develop into war" as heavy weaponry was used on both sides. The situation further intensified when the Thai Army claimed to have killed nearly 100 Cambodian soldiers near the Preah Vihear temple, a disputed site. While Thailand confirmed the attack, Cambodia’s government did not comment, and independent verification of the details was not possible. Thailand has declared martial law in eight districts along the border as fighting continues to rage.

The violence erupted after months of rising tensions over the contested territory near the Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, which both countries claim as their own. A Cambodian soldier’s death in a skirmish in late May had already strained relations, and the conflict reignited this week following a breakdown in ceasefire talks. Cambodia's Prime Minister, Hun Manet, accused Thailand of reneging on an agreement to halt fighting, while Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had attempted to broker a ceasefire.

Both Thailand and Cambodia have received calls for peace from the United States, China, and ASEAN, with each nation accusing the other of starting the conflict. However, Thailand has expressed a preference for a bilateral resolution, despite international mediation efforts. The situation remains volatile, and the prospect of a quick diplomatic resolution seems increasingly unlikely as military actions escalate.

In response to the growing crisis, the United States called for an immediate cessation of attacks and protection of civilians. China also expressed concern, with foreign minister Wang Yi attributing the conflict to the colonial-era borders drawn by France, which have long been a source of dispute. As the violence continues, both countries' leaders have expressed defiance, complicating efforts for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

With more than 131,000 people evacuated from the affected regions, the humanitarian impact of the conflict is growing. Thousands of evacuees in Thailand have sought shelter in temporary facilities, where aid efforts are underway to provide food and medical assistance. The ongoing violence, fueled by historical territorial disputes, continues to devastate the lives of those caught in the crossfire.
