Residents of British Columbia will change their clocks this weekend as daylight saving time begins and, according to provincial officials, it will be the last time they ever have to do it. The province announced Monday that it will permanently adopt the new clock setting, ending the long-standing practice of adjusting clocks twice a year.
The change will take effect on Sunday, when the province transitions to a permanent schedule officials are calling Pacific Time. The shift will align British Columbia with the Yukon Territory, which stopped changing its clocks in 2020 and has operated on a consistent year-round time ever since.
Under the new system, British Columbia will match Alberta and other Mountain Standard Time regions during the winter months while remaining synchronized with Pacific states like California, Washington, and Oregon for much of the rest of the year. Officials say the move will help simplify coordination with major economic partners across North America.
Premier David Eby said the twice-yearly clock changes have long caused unnecessary disruptions for families and businesses. Speaking about the policy change, he argued that the “spring forward” and “fall back” system creates avoidable stress, especially for parents managing school schedules and busy work routines.
The decision follows strong public support. A province-wide survey conducted in 2019 found that roughly 93 percent of the 223,000 residents who participated favored adopting daylight saving time year-round rather than continuing the seasonal clock changes.
Officials say ending the biannual clock adjustment could bring several benefits, including more stable sleep schedules and greater consistency for daily routines. They also note that longer daylight hours in winter evenings may improve quality of life for many residents.
Online reactions to the announcement have been mixed. While many welcomed the end of the clock-changing ritual, others expressed concern that the shift could lead to darker winter mornings. Provincial officials responded that different preferences exist for morning versus evening daylight but emphasized that the overwhelming survey support helped guide the final decision.
