Thaksin Shinawatra was released from prison in Thailand on Monday after receiving parole based partly on good behavior and his age. The former prime minister, who has remained one of the country’s most influential political figures for decades, left Bangkok’s Klong Prem Central Prison smiling alongside family members and supporters from the Pheu Thai Party.
Thaksin first rose to power in 2001 after campaigning on populist policies such as universal health care and financial support for rural communities. His leadership transformed Thai politics and made him a major rival to the country’s royalist military establishment. Although he was removed from office in a 2006 military coup and later went into self imposed exile, parties connected to him continued winning elections for years.
His political comeback accelerated in 2023 when he returned to Thailand after years abroad. Shortly afterward, his party helped form the government, and his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, later became prime minister. However, her tenure ended abruptly after political controversy, while Thaksin himself faced renewed legal troubles connected to earlier corruption and abuse of power convictions.
Despite being sentenced to prison, Thaksin spent much of his detention in a hospital before receiving a royal pardon that reduced his punishment. His latest release has revived debate in Thailand about the extent of his political influence and whether he will continue shaping government decisions from behind the scenes. Critics fear he could still wield major power despite not holding office himself.
Under the terms of his parole, Thaksin must wear an electronic monitoring device for several months. Analysts say he may attempt to stay out of public view, though many believe the country’s traditional establishment will continue to view him as a political threat regardless of how visible he remains.
