Russia is focusing its military efforts on the small, war-torn city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, pushing closer to capturing this strategic location in the Donetsk region. After more than a year of intense fighting, the city, once home to 60,000 people, has been reduced to rubble, with only around 1,300 residents remaining. Ukrainian soldiers defending the city report fierce combat, with nearly one-third of all battles along the front line occurring in Pokrovsk. The city has become a focal point for Russian attacks, with President Volodymyr Zelensky noting that half of Russia's glide bomb strikes are concentrated there, though these figures could not be independently verified.
While Ukraine claims to be making progress in regaining territory, Russian troops have recently taken control of the southwestern edge of Pokrovsk, according to a map from DeepState, a Ukrainian military-linked group. Russian forces have also secured a small section of the city's center and western side, leaving the rest of Pokrovsk in a contested zone. The DeepState group described Pokrovsk as "gradually being absorbed" by Russian forces, signaling a slow but steady encroachment on the city.
The fall of Pokrovsk would be significant, as it would be the largest Ukrainian city to fall to Russian forces since Bakhmut in May 2023. Its capture would also represent a critical step for Russia in advancing toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the last major Ukrainian-held cities in Donetsk, a region that President Vladimir Putin has long sought to control. For the Kremlin, taking Pokrovsk would help bolster its narrative of progress on the battlefield, sending a message to Ukraine and the world that the situation will only worsen unless Ukraine concedes to Moscow’s demands.
Despite the geopolitical implications, the military importance of losing Pokrovsk may not be as dire for Ukraine as it seems. While the city’s defense is important to Ukrainian morale and the broader war effort, the incremental gains Russia has made there have come at a heavy cost. Military analysts argue that while Ukraine is trying to hold the city, the larger strategic value lies in the toll these battles are taking on Russian forces. According to Laura Cooper, a former Pentagon official, the slow Russian progress in Pokrovsk reflects the challenges Moscow faces in achieving its objectives in Donetsk, dampening any hopes for a quick victory.
The war has turned into a grinding, attritional battle, with both sides suffering significant losses. Combat along the front lines has become increasingly deadly, with drones making large areas too dangerous for tanks and heavy equipment. Ukrainian forces have adapted to this new style of warfare, hiding in destroyed buildings and using limited mobility to avoid Russian advances. However, the situation is exacerbated by Ukraine's shortage of soldiers, with the front line often resembling a game of Whac-a-Mole, where small gaps in defenses are quickly exploited by Russian forces.
As the conflict continues, both sides are feeling the strain. With Ukraine reporting that Russian forces outnumber their own in the Pokrovsk region by eight to one, the city has become a key battleground. If Pokrovsk falls, Ukraine could face the collapse of other towns in the area, particularly Myrnohrad, which is crucial to maintaining a defensive line. Ukrainian commanders have warned that the fall of Pokrovsk would be a critical blow, but they continue to fight to hold onto the city as long as possible. However, with Russian forces gaining ground and the situation growing increasingly dire, some analysts fear that Ukraine may be forced to retreat, much like it did in previous battles in the Kursk region and Avdiivka, leaving soldiers vulnerable to further casualties.
