High in the misty Pyrenees of northern Spain lies the tiny village of Tor, a haunting place with just 13 stone houses and a history marked by violence. For nearly 30 years, the unsolved murder of 70-year-old Josep Montané, known locally as Sansa, has loomed over the village. His killing, which took place in 1995, was the third murder in Tor within just 15 years, and it continues to haunt the small community. The case has drawn the attention of true-crime enthusiasts, transforming the village into Spain’s capital of real-life mysteries.

Sansa’s death was particularly shocking: his decomposed body was found with an electric cable around his neck. His murder came after years of bitter conflicts between neighbors, including disputes over the surrounding mountain, smuggling routes into Andorra, and business deals with a nearby ski resort. In the late 1990s, a young journalist named Carles Porta began investigating the crime. What started as a small TV report expanded into a book, a podcast, and eventually a popular documentary. Each new piece of media stirred up more interest in the unsolved mystery.

The media spotlight has since turned Tor into a strange tourist attraction. True-crime fans visit the village in droves, staying in what was once Sansa’s home, taking photos near the murder site, and even re-enacting the crime. For the few residents left, including Pilar Tomàs, who runs a restaurant in her home, the attention has been a double-edged sword. While it brings in money, it has also disrupted their quiet lives. “We never imagined this,” Pilar said, watching as tourists treat her home like a stage for their macabre curiosity.

Tor’s history of tension stretches back even further. In 1896, the original 13 families who lived there agreed to share ownership of the mountain, but only if they were year-round residents. Over time, as smuggling across the Andorra border became more lucrative, rival factions formed. Sansa, eager to sell his land to developers for a ski resort, clashed with his main rival, El Palanca, who wanted to preserve the land for farming. After a court ruling in 1995 that Sansa was the sole owner, tensions boiled over, and just months later, he was killed.

Since then, theories about who killed Sansa have multiplied. Some point to local villagers, while others suggest smugglers or hired killers were involved. Carles Porta, who has made the case his life’s work, now believes a hitman living in Miami may have been responsible. Porta’s investigations have brought him fame and fortune, but they’ve also kept the case alive in the public imagination. Locals say his success has come at the expense of their peace. “Everyone asks him who killed Sansa,” said a hotel worker, “but no one asks what it did to us.”

Despite the overwhelming attention from tourists, the residents of Tor are growing weary. The “true-crime tourism” has brought money to the village, but it has also caused overcrowding and unease. Many residents, like Pilar, admit that they’d trade the extra income for a return to peace. “People need an ending,” she said. “But I don’t think this mystery will ever be solved.” As the seasons change, Tor quiets down, but the questions surrounding Sansa’s death linger, unanswered, in the hearts of the few who remain.

For now, Tor is stuck in a cycle of fascination and frustration, with locals like Pilar walking the same streets where Sansa’s body was found, carrying the weight of a mystery that refuses to fade. The tourists may come and go, but the true answer to the question of who killed Sansa remains elusive, and Pilar is certain of only one thing: "It’s not me."

Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Improvident (adj, im-PRAH-vuh-dunt) - Improvident is a formal word used to describe something that does not foresee or provide for the future, especially with regard to money. An improvident relationship, habit, or practice is financially unwise or impractical.
