Europe is rallying once again in support of Ukraine as Britain hosts a crucial meeting on Friday with the "coalition of the willing." The meeting, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will focus on strategies to tighten the pressure on Russia, including a potential boycott of Russian oil and gas, a loan to Ukraine backed by frozen Russian sovereign assets, and an acceleration of weapon deliveries to bolster Ukraine's defense against Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, alongside leaders from Denmark, the Netherlands, and NATO, arrived in London for the discussions. Another 20 leaders will join the session via videoconference, according to 10 Downing Street. This collaborative effort reflects Europe's growing resolve to stand with Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Europe's momentum is building, following President Trump's sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. This was quickly followed by the European Union’s own set of sanctions. The EU has also pledged continued financial and military support to Ukraine, with Britain stepping up its efforts by promising an additional 100 air-defense missiles to Ukraine's forces.
"From the battlefield to the global markets, as Putin continues to commit atrocities in Ukraine, we must ratchet up the pressure on Russia and build on President Trump’s decisive action," Starmer stated ahead of the meeting. Both he and Zelensky are set to address the media later in the day, reinforcing their commitment to Ukraine’s security and the global implications of the conflict, especially in the Donetsk region, which remains a focal point of Russia's territorial ambitions.
This summit is seen as an effort to strengthen Ukraine's position heading into the harsh winter months of the conflict. Under a deal worth £1.6 billion, Britain has already agreed to supply Ukraine with over 5,000 lightweight missiles, with production ramped up faster than expected. The country is now poised to deliver an additional 140 missiles, ensuring Ukraine is equipped for the upcoming winter battles.
While the coalition’s efforts have seen mixed results due to political differences, including shifting positions from President Trump and the European Union’s internal challenges, there is still a sense of unity in the face of Russia's aggression. The EU struggled this week to finalize a plan to use frozen Russian assets to fund a large loan for Ukraine, with Belgium expressing concerns about legal ramifications.
Despite these hurdles, Starmer is pushing for progress on the loan proposal, though Britain, post-Brexit, no longer wields significant influence in EU negotiations. Meanwhile, Zelensky continues his diplomatic efforts, meeting with King Charles III at Windsor Castle as a symbol of Britain’s unwavering solidarity with Ukraine. This marks the third time this year the king has met with Zelensky, further cementing the strong ties between the two nations.
