In Beijing, a humanoid robot named Lightning took part in a half-marathon alongside more than 300 other robots, showcasing just how far robotics technology has come. Unlike human runners, Lightning didn’t need rest or training, it just needed to avoid crashing into competitors during the race.
The bright-red robot did stumble near the finish line, hitting a barricade and falling. But with a bit of help, it got back up and completed the race in just over 50 minutes. That time was faster than any human runner in the event and even beat the current human half-marathon world record.
Developed by Honor, Lightning was built to mimic elite athletes, with long legs and advanced joints cooled using technology similar to smartphones. Many of the robots in the race ran on their own, though some were still controlled remotely.
Experts say the race highlights China’s strength in building advanced robotics hardware, even if it doesn’t represent a huge leap in artificial intelligence. While events like this grab attention, the bigger question remains: how these robotic abilities will translate into real-world uses beyond impressive demonstrations.
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Nugatory (adj, NOO-guh-tor-ee) - Something described as nugatory is of little or no consequence. In law, nugatory describes something (such as a statute or agreement) without operative legal effect.
Example: Most of the criticism of the film in the weeks since its release has been nugatory nonsense.
