A new electric aircraft made by Joby Aviation completed a demonstration flight from Kennedy International Airport to Manhattan in April, taking about 10 minutes. The aircraft, which combines features of a helicopter and an airplane, is part of a growing effort to bring electric air taxis into urban transportation.
Supporters say these aircraft could eventually replace helicopters for airport transfers, cargo trips and medical transport because they are expected to be quieter and cheaper to operate. The federal government is encouraging testing through a program designed to help cities, states and companies prepare for electric air taxi service.
Still, regular passenger flights are not available yet. Companies such as Joby, Archer and Beta Technologies must first win certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, a process that requires extensive testing and could take years.
Experts say air taxis will likely begin in limited, high-end markets rather than becoming common flying cars. Costs, battery limits, weather, pilot availability, charging infrastructure and safety approvals all remain major hurdles before the aircraft can be used widely.
The push is also tied to competition with China, which has moved quickly in drones and electric aviation. U.S. officials hope early testing will help the country stay competitive as companies race to define the future of short-distance air travel. It can also refer to a major or fundamental change in something based primarily on rearrangement of its existing elements. Permutation is usually used in its plural form.
