May 29th, 2026 - Japan’s Population Drops by 3 Million as Demographic Crisis Deepens

Japan’s population has fallen by more than 3 million people in just five years, marking the country’s largest census decline since records began in 1920. Preliminary figures show the population dropped from 126.1 million in 2020 to 123 million in 2025, highlighting the growing impact of low birth rates and an aging society.

The decline is now affecting nearly the entire country, with all but two of Japan’s 47 prefectures losing residents. Rural areas have been hit especially hard as young people move to major cities for work and education, leaving behind aging communities, empty homes, closing schools and shrinking public services.

Tokyo and a few other urban areas are still growing, but experts warn that Japan’s overall population loss is unlikely to reverse without major immigration. The trend is already straining the economy, health care system and labor force, and could offer a warning for other developed countries facing similar demographic pressures.

Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Cohort (noun, KOH-hort) - Cohort refers to a group or band of individuals, as in “a cohort of supporters.” It can also be used for a group of individuals who have a statistical factor (such as age) in common in a demographic study, as in “a cohort of people born in the 1980s.” Cohort can be used for individuals too, as for a friend, companion, or colleague, but it is almost always used in its plural form.

Example: I wouldn’t have made it through graduate school without the help of my supportive cohort.
