April 14th, 2026 - As War Hits Dubai’s Economy, Migrant Workers Feel the Impact Most

As war with Iran intensified, the economic impact rippled far beyond the battlefield, hitting cities like Dubai in unexpected ways. While the United Arab Emirates avoided major destruction thanks to strong air defenses, daily life, especially for workers, has been deeply disrupted.

Tourism, a key driver of Dubai’s economy, has slowed dramatically. Hotels that were once full now sit mostly empty, and major events have been postponed. Even one of the world’s busiest travel hubs, Dubai International Airport, has seen a sharp drop in activity, reflecting how quickly global conflicts can affect international travel and business.

The people feeling this the most are migrant workers, who make up the majority of the population. Many have been furloughed, had their salaries cut, or lost their jobs entirely. Without steady income, workers who rely on sending money back home are being forced into difficult choices, including reducing meals or considering returning to their home countries.

Despite their importance to industries like construction, hospitality, and retail, migrant workers often have little protection during economic downturns. Reports from groups like Human Rights Watch highlight how these workers are frequently the first to face layoffs or wage cuts, exposing deeper issues in labor systems across the region.

At the same time, fear and uncertainty continue to grow. Some workers have already been repatriated, while others wait anxiously for delayed salaries or visa renewals. Even those still employed are unsure how long their jobs will last as businesses struggle to stay afloat.

Although the government has introduced limited support measures for affected industries, the long-term outlook remains unclear. For now, many workers are holding on, hoping the situation improves—but as the conflict drags on, the economic pressure is becoming harder to ignore, especially for those with the least security.

Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Enjoin (verb, in-JOIN) - Enjoining is about requiring or prohibiting. To enjoin a person is to direct or order them to do something. To enjoin an act or practice is to prohibit it; in legal contexts, that prohibition is by way of a judicial order.

Example: Our guide enjoined us to take great care as we began our journey.
