April 20th, 2026 - Gunman Opens Fire at Teotihuacán Pyramids, Killing Canadian Tourist and Injuring Several Others
A Canadian tourist was killed and multiple others were injured on Monday after a man opened fire at the Teotihuacán pyramids, one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations located just outside Mexico City. Officials said the attack left several people wounded, including visitors from the United States.
Authorities confirmed that the gunman later took his own life. Emergency responders from both state and federal security forces arrived quickly at the archaeological site after receiving reports of gunfire. Officials reported that two people were found dead at the scene, one of whom was believed to be the attacker. Later in the evening, federal authorities released details identifying 13 additional injured tourists. Among them, seven suffered gunshot wounds, including two children aged 6 and 13 from Colombia and Brazil. All of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, though it remains unclear how some sustained their injuries. Six U.S. citizens between the ages of 26 and 61 were also among the injured. Two of them were confirmed to have been shot during the incident.
The attack is believed to be the first instance of this kind of violence in the modern history of the Teotihuacán site. Mexico’s security cabinet confirmed that a Canadian woman had died in the shooting, although her identity was not publicly released due to privacy restrictions.
Videos shared online showed scenes of panic as tourists took cover near the Pyramid of the Moon while gunfire rang out. Witnesses described hearing multiple shots as people scrambled for safety. One visitor recounted seeing the gunman positioned on the pyramid and firing toward the crowd below.
Mexican authorities later identified the suspect as Julio César Jasso Ramírez, a Mexican national who appeared to have acted alone. Officials have launched an investigation into the incident as government leaders expressed condolences and pledged support for the victims and their families.
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Indoctrinate (verb, in-DAHK-truh-nayt) - To indoctrinate someone is to teach them to fully accept the ideas, opinions, and beliefs of a particular group while categorically rejecting other ideas, opinions, and beliefs.
