Wellington, the capital of Wellington, and nearby areas were placed under a state of emergency after intense rainfall caused flash flooding and landslides. The severe weather swept away vehicles, shut down more than 100 schools, and left roads and homes buried under debris. In some locations, rainfall exceeded three inches within a single hour, according to MetService.
The emergency declaration, issued on Monday, granted authorities expanded powers to manage the crisis and carry out evacuations. Residents in low-lying areas were advised to move to safer ground overnight, though the emergency status was lifted in certain districts by Tuesday. While no deaths have been confirmed, police reported that one man remains missing after floodwaters and debris struck the property where he had been staying.
Although the heaviest rainfall had subsided by Tuesday morning, forecasters warned that additional wet conditions could still bring further disruption. Saturated ground has increased the likelihood of landslides, and localized flooding continues to pose risks. Mayor Andrew Little said recovery efforts would take time and urged residents to remain indoors until conditions improved, noting widespread damage including fallen trees and debris-filled streets.
Across the region, scenes of destruction showed homes partially buried by landslides, vehicles stranded in unusual positions, and muddy water rushing through buildings. About 120 schools were closed, and some suffered extensive damage. At one preschool, floodwaters surged through classrooms and destroyed supplies just as the new term was set to begin. Officials expect the storm system to gradually weaken as it moves north in the coming days.
