Turkey has approved new legislation that will prevent children under the age of 15 from accessing social media, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to regulate online activity among young users. The law, passed by parliament, now awaits the signature of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is expected to formally enact it.

The measure requires social media companies to block access for underage users and introduce parental controls for online transactions. Supporters of the law, including the ruling Justice and Development Party, argue that it is designed to shield children from risks such as addiction, cyberbullying, and exposure to harmful or explicit content.

However, the legislation leaves several key questions unanswered, including which platforms will be affected and how age verification will be enforced. Turkish officials have suggested that users may need to log in through a government-run portal, a proposal that has raised concerns among critics.

Free speech advocates warn that the system could expand government oversight of online activity and threaten privacy. Critics argue that requiring identity verification could discourage anonymous expression and limit open discussion, particularly on sensitive topics.

The law comes amid growing global concern about the impact of social media on young people. Countries such as Australia and Indonesia have introduced or are considering similar restrictions, reflecting a broader international trend toward tighter digital regulations.

In Turkey, the urgency behind the legislation has increased following recent violent incidents, with authorities examining suspects’ social media activity for clues. While the government frames the law as a protective measure, critics remain wary of its potential to expand state control over digital spaces.
