A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan early Monday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake occurred at approximately 5:23 a.m. local time, about 11 miles west of Sarabetsu, based on initial data.
Seismologists noted that the reported magnitude could be revised as more information becomes available. Officials also said that updated data may lead to changes in the earthquake’s shake intensity map as scientists continue to analyze the event.
