Greece is moving to ban social media access for children under 15, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pushes new legislation aimed at protecting young people from the growing mental health risks linked to online platforms. The law is expected to pass with broad support and would take effect in 2027.

The proposal comes as more countries, including Australia and Spain, take stronger action against Big Tech’s influence on children. European leaders have increasingly taken a tougher stance compared to the United States, emphasizing safety and well-being over unrestricted access.

Mitsotakis said the decision was “difficult but necessary,” pointing to concerns from parents about sleep disruption, anxiety, and the constant pressure kids face online. He stressed that while technology can be valuable, many platforms are designed to maximize screen time and engagement, often at the expense of children’s development.

Under the plan, platforms would be required to verify users’ ages, with enforcement supported by a government-backed app linked to parents. While critics question how effective such bans will be, Greece is positioning itself at the forefront of a growing global push to rein in social media’s impact on the next generation.

Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Panache (noun, puh-NAHSH) - In simplest terms, panache refers to lively grace and style; it appears in contexts in which words like verve and flair are also applied.
