Murders are down, drug seizures are up, and illegal border crossings have nearly halted. Yet fentanyl continues to flow into the United States, and recent incidents, such as the escape of a Chinese national involved in the drug trade while under Mexican house arrest, have reignited U.S. complaints.

Ms. Sheinbaum has used diplomacy to delay punitive measures. When Mr. Trump threatened new 30 percent tariffs in response to ongoing drug issues, she negotiated a 90-day suspension while seeking a broader trade deal. Tensions have flared further with announcements like the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s “bold bilateral initiative” against cartels, which she publicly stated she had not agreed to, criticizing the agency for overstating collaboration.

Despite these challenges, Ms. Sheinbaum continues to pursue cooperation with the United States while insisting on respecting Mexico’s sovereignty. Officials indicate that both countries have a tentative plan for joint action and intelligence sharing, and she is scheduled to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to advance the partnership. Analysts warn that the lack of clear metrics for success and the constant shifting of expectations by the Trump administration leave her in a difficult position, with few options other than compliance if she wishes to safeguard Mexico’s economy and her administration’s stability.
