Sunniva Gylver, the newly appointed bishop of Oslo, has made a name for herself with a fresh, inclusive approach to leadership within the Church of Norway. Rather than focusing on converting people to faith, Gylver emphasizes inclusion and empathy. As bishop, she seeks to open the doors of the church to everyone, ensuring that the church remains relevant in today’s society.
Before taking on her current role in February, Gylver had already made waves with her unconventional approach to ministry. A longtime pastor, she was known for wearing a T-shirt that read “PREST” instead of the traditional clergy collar, and her dreadlocks and nose ring became iconic symbols of her progressive outlook. Her unorthodox methods, such as introducing yoga services and philosophy cafes in the church, raised eyebrows, but also attracted a new generation of believers.
Born and raised in Oslo, Gylver’s religious journey was shaped by her experiences with people from different walks of life. Her faith evolved after witnessing the way some Christians spoke superficially about life and faith. This led her to pursue a deep understanding of theology so that she could engage in meaningful discussions about faith, and eventually become a pastor.
In the face of challenges like political upheaval and a decline in church membership, Gylver’s work has garnered praise for revitalizing the church. Under her leadership, the church has seen a rise in attendance, especially among young people, as they seek comfort and solidarity during times of uncertainty. Gylver’s focus on justice and inclusion has also made her a key figure in the progressive side of Norwegian Christianity.
One of Gylver’s most notable actions was raising the Rainbow flag over Oslo’s cathedral during Pride Week, a bold statement of support for the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, when other Christian leaders criticized parishes for hosting iftar meals with Muslims during Ramadan, Gylver participated in one herself, showing solidarity and inclusivity in action.
Despite her popularity, Gylver has faced criticism from conservative factions, especially for her support of same-sex marriage and her unconventional methods. However, she remains firm in her belief that the church should be a space for justice, compassion, and genuine connection, rather than a place of rigid dogma. As she continues to lead, Gylver is focused on ensuring that the church is a beacon of hope and inclusivity for all people, regardless of their background or beliefs.
