A court in Milan dismissed a fraud case against Chiara Ferragni, Italy’s most prominent influencer, on Wednesday, marking the end of a legal battle that had stirred media controversy and led to a loss of sponsors and followers. The case centered on accusations that Ferragni misled consumers in 2022 with the sale of a Christmas cake, or pandoro, which was marketed as benefiting a children's hospital. The court ruled that there were no grounds for the charges, as no formal complaint was filed by a victim, and the complaint was withdrawn under a settlement agreement.

Ferragni, 38, had faced a potential 20-month prison sentence for aggravated fraud, but the charge was later downgraded to a simple fraud charge. After the case was dismissed, Ferragni expressed relief, calling it the end of a “nightmare” that had lasted for two years. She took to social media to share with her 28 million Instagram followers that the judge found no legal grounds for the trial.

In 2022, Ferragni was accused of promoting a pandoro that was priced significantly higher than the usual version, while claiming that proceeds from the sales would go toward buying medical equipment for a children’s hospital. However, an Italian journalist revealed that the bakery involved, Balocco, had already made a donation to the hospital and that Ferragni’s partnership with the company was a commercial venture, leading to public outcry and a media frenzy dubbed "Pandoro Gate."

As the controversy grew, Ferragni was fined 1.1 million euros ($1.3 million) by the Italian Competition Authority for misleading advertising. The authority claimed that Ferragni's companies had earned over 1 million euros in licensing fees without donating any of it to the hospital. In response, Ferragni apologized to her followers, admitting a "communication error," and pledged to donate 1 million euros to the hospital.

The scandal led to significant repercussions for Ferragni. Sponsors such as Coca-Cola ended their partnerships with her, and she lost hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram. Even Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized her for setting a poor example, adding to the public backlash Ferragni faced.

The case also led to stricter regulations for influencers in Italy. In November, the Italian regulatory agency for communication industries introduced new rules requiring influencers with large followings to register as "relevant influencers." This legal and regulatory crackdown reflects the growing scrutiny of influencers and their responsibility to avoid misleading advertising practices.

Ferragni was also involved in a class-action lawsuit filed by an Italian consumer rights group in 2023, accusing her of misleading consumers through a separate collaboration with a sweets company. While the case against her has now ended, it left a lasting impact on the influencer industry in Italy, and Ferragni has had to navigate the fallout from both legal battles and public scrutiny.
