Israeli forces killed and wounded dozens of Palestinians on Sunday in the northern Gaza Strip after crowds gathered near a crossing to seize aid from United Nations trucks, according to Gaza health officials. The incident marks the latest in a series of deadly shootings amid a worsening humanitarian crisis, with hunger and desperation affecting the Palestinian population during Israel's ongoing military campaign against Hamas.

The attack occurred near the Zikim crossing between Gaza and Israel. According to the Gaza health ministry, more than 60 people were killed, including at least eight children. Mohammad Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, confirmed that the field hospital had received both the dead and more than 100 wounded from the scene. A spokesperson for the Palestine Red Crescent reported that their field hospital was overwhelmed with gunshot victims, with at least 10 survivors being pulled from the water.

Israeli soldiers fired "warning shots" after thousands of Gazans gathered in the area, claiming they were acting to remove an immediate threat. However, the Israeli military did not provide further details on the nature of the threat and contested the reported number of casualties. The United Nations’ World Food Program confirmed that 25 trucks carrying food aid for Palestinians entered northern Gaza when massive crowds appeared and came under gunfire.

The chaotic situation reflects the ongoing difficulty in aid distribution in Gaza, where crowds of desperate Palestinians have been attempting to seize aid supplies. On Saturday, at least 32 people were killed near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation site in southern Gaza, and though the Sunday incident did not occur near one of these sites, the violence near aid distribution points is part of the growing pattern.

Shadi al-Nazli, a local resident, explained that many Palestinians rushed to the border after hearing rumors of incoming aid trucks. He noted that such gatherings often turn violent, as Israeli soldiers open fire to prevent crowds from approaching the border area. Al-Nazli described Sunday’s scene as particularly intense, with people spending the night near the crossing, desperate for supplies.

The Israeli military also issued evacuation orders for northern Gaza and parts of Gaza City, designating them as "combat zones" in preparation for potential further military actions. This came after an earlier evacuation order for the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah, where many displaced Palestinians had taken refuge. The new orders have caused widespread panic, as residents fear an expansion of Israel's ground invasion.

The ongoing violence and evacuation orders highlight the dire situation in Gaza, where more than 57,000 Palestinians, including many children, have been killed since the war began in October 2023. While the violence continues, uncertainty surrounds Israel’s next steps, including whether the evacuation orders are part of negotiations with Hamas or a precursor to further military action. With the fate of hostages still uncertain, the region remains on edge, with both Palestinians and Israelis facing an increasingly perilous situation.
