Beate Uhse, a German businesswoman who built a controversial but highly profitable retail empire selling erotic products across Europe, died Monday in a hospital in Switzerland at the age of 81. Her company, Beate Uhse A.G., based in Flensburg, Germany, said the cause of death was pneumonia. Over the course of her life, Uhse became one of the most recognizable figures associated with Europe’s shifting social attitudes during the late 20th century.

Her business began in the difficult years following World War II, when she was a widowed pilot struggling to support her young son. At the time, contraception and sexual education were taboo topics in Germany. Uhse began traveling from village to village on a bicycle, distributing pamphlets that explained birth control methods and offering advice to women who had little access to reliable information.

As German society gradually liberalized, Uhse expanded her small operation into a large commercial enterprise. She opened her first storefront in 1962 and eventually built a company that included retail shops, mail-order sales, cinemas, and film production. By the late 1990s, her business had grown into one of Germany’s most recognizable companies, employing hundreds of workers and operating stores across Europe.

Despite criticism from both conservatives and social activists over the years, Uhse argued that her work helped normalize discussions around sexuality and personal health. By the end of her career, her company had reached annual revenues of roughly $100 million and was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, marking a dramatic transformation from her modest beginnings in postwar Germany.
