Aida Quilcué, an Indigenous activist and Colombian senator, said she was traveling through rural southwest Colombia with her security team when armed men in camouflage suddenly blocked their vehicle on a remote road. According to Quilcué, roughly six masked men forced the group out of the car and ordered them to remain silent before escorting them a short distance into nearby brush.

Quilcué said the attackers forced her and her two bodyguards to kneel while pointing guns at their backs. The tense standoff lasted several hours before the men eventually fled, leaving the senator unharmed. Authorities had already launched a search operation after passers-by reported seeing her abandoned pickup truck, prompting concern among senior officials in the Colombian government.

The incident has added to growing fears about rising political violence in Colombia ahead of national elections. Quilcué, a prominent Indigenous leader whose husband was assassinated in the same region in 2008, said the experience was one of the most frightening moments of her life. She described feeling dangerously close to being killed during the ordeal.

Her detention is part of a broader wave of violence targeting politicians and candidates across the country. In the lead-up to congressional elections, reports of kidnappings, threats, and attacks against political leaders have increased significantly, raising alarms among election observers and political parties.

Analysts say the surge in violence marks the most serious security challenge since Colombia’s 2016 peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). After the rebel group disarmed, other criminal and insurgent organizations moved into the power vacuum, fighting for control of territory, drug routes, and illegal mining operations.

The United Nations has recorded dozens of killings and more than a hundred threats against political figures in the past year alone. Election monitors have also warned that hundreds of municipalities face elevated risks of electoral intimidation and violence, particularly in rural regions where armed groups maintain strong influence.

Despite the security concerns, Colombian officials say they are preparing large-scale protection measures to safeguard voters and candidates. The government has pledged to deploy hundreds of thousands of soldiers to protect polling stations and maintain order as the country prepares for a critical election season.
