French President Emmanuel Macron opened a major Africa summit in Nairobi, marking the first time the long running gathering was held outside France or Francophone Africa. The choice of Kenya’s capital reflected France’s effort to reshape its relationships on the continent as its influence weakens in several former colonies.
At the summit, Macron promoted deeper cooperation between Europe and Africa, arguing that both regions should work together to build greater independence from powers such as the United States and China. He announced billions in planned investment across Africa and encouraged African business leaders to consider investing in France as well.
The outreach comes as France faces strained ties with parts of Francophone Africa, where several governments have pushed for the withdrawal of French troops. Analysts say Macron is seeking new partnerships beyond France’s traditional sphere of influence, especially as African countries look to diversify their diplomatic and economic options.
For Kenya, hosting the summit gave President William Ruto a chance to highlight his country’s growing diplomatic role. More broadly, the event underscored how African leaders are using global interest in the continent to seek better investment deals and expand their international partnerships.
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Catercorner (adverb or adjective, KAT-ee-kor-ner) - Catercorner is used to describe two things that are located across from each other on opposite corners. It is a less common variant of kitty-corner.
Example: The store is catercorner from the park, making it the perfect location to grab snacks for our picnic.
