May 15th, 2026 - Five Italian Divers Die During Deep Cave Dive in the Maldives

Five Italian nationals died during a scuba diving trip in the Maldives after they failed to resurface from a deep cave dive. The victims included marine ecologist Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, research fellow Muriel Oddenino, former student Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti.

The group had been diving near the Vaavu atoll, where underwater caves and reef walls drop to significant depths. Italian authorities said the divers were attempting to explore caves about 164 feet below the surface. When they did not return, the Maldives coast guard launched a search with help from defense forces, police, nearby vessels, and resort crews.

Officials described the recovery effort as dangerous because the caves required specialized equipment and conditions were difficult. One body was recovered from a depth of about 196 feet, while the search for the others continued amid poor weather. At least 20 other Italians on the trip were unharmed because they did not join the dive.

The University of Genoa said Montefalcone had been in the Maldives for a research mission focused on the marine environment and climate change, but emphasized that the dive itself was personal and not part of the university’s scientific work. Colleagues and relatives described the victims as experienced divers and ocean researchers.

Maldivian police have opened a criminal investigation into the accident and are examining whether safety procedures, weather warnings, and diving protocols were followed. The deaths have shocked Italy and raised questions about how such an experienced group could have been caught in one of the Maldives’ deadliest recent diving accidents.
