Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez have officially advanced to Peru’s presidential runoff after weeks of vote counting, disputes, and political tension. The two candidates represent sharply different visions for the country, with Fujimori offering a conservative, tough-on-security platform and Sánchez pushing for constitutional change and a larger state role in the economy.
Fujimori, the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, finished first in the crowded 35-candidate race with 17 percent of the vote. Sánchez, a leftist congressman, narrowly secured second place with 12 percent, beating far-right candidate Rafael López Aliaga by just over 21,000 votes.
López Aliaga has rejected the outcome and claimed fraud, though international observers said they found no evidence to support those allegations. Election Day problems in Lima, including delayed voting materials and polling stations that failed to open on time, added to the controversy and fueled protests demanding that the vote be annulled or extended.
The race has also been shaken by legal trouble for Sánchez, as prosecutors accused him of document forgery and false statements tied to his party’s finances. Sánchez denied the charges and said he would prove the accusations wrong.
Fujimori remains one of Peru’s most recognizable but polarizing political figures. Supporters credit her family’s legacy with fighting insurgency and stabilizing the country, while critics accuse her and her allies of weakening institutions and concentrating power.
Sánchez has built support among rural and working-class voters who feel ignored by Lima’s political establishment. His campaign draws heavily from frustration over the removal of former President Pedro Castillo and the deadly protests that followed, setting up a runoff likely to deepen Peru’s political divide.
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Affable (adj, AF-uh-bul) - Affable describes someone who is friendly and easy to talk to. It can also describe something, such as someone’s personality, that is characterized by ease and friendliness.
