The Louvre has chosen a team of architects from France, Germany, and the United States to design a major expansion of the Paris museum. The project will add a second public entrance, create new exhibition space, and give the Mona Lisa its own dedicated area to help reduce overcrowding.
Studios Architecture Paris and Selldorf Architects were selected from a shortlist of five finalists. French officials described the winning design as both modern and respectful of the historic museum, with plans to connect the city, the former royal palace, and the museum more smoothly.
The expansion is seen as an important legacy project for President Emmanuel Macron, but it has faced criticism over its rising cost and uncertain future. The project has also been complicated by recent problems at the Louvre, including a major jewel heist, security concerns, building issues, and staff strikes.
The new entrance would be built near the Grande Colonnade on the eastern side of the palace, turning a quiet and underused area into a major public space with gardens and walkways. The plan would be the Louvre’s biggest transformation since I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid opened in 1989.
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Vindicate (verb, VIN-duh-kayt) - To vindicate someone is to show that they are not guilty. Vindicate can also mean “to show that someone or something that has been criticized or doubted is correct, true, or reasonable.”
Example: A series of testimonies helped vindicate the defendant.
