Bolivia has been disrupted by weeks of protests and road blockades that have isolated La Paz, caused food shortages, interrupted transportation and driven up prices. The unrest has intensified recently, with clashes between miners and police, reports of looting, and demonstrators demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz.
Many protesters are angry that Paz, who ran as a centrist alternative after years of leftist MAS rule, has filled his government with conservative business figures while leaving Indigenous, labor and rural sectors feeling excluded. His decisions to abolish a wealth tax and pass a disputed land law added to the backlash, even though the government later made concessions.
The protest movement has since grown beyond specific demands from teachers, transport workers and Indigenous groups into a broader challenge to Paz’s leadership. Supporters of former President Evo Morales have helped fuel the unrest, but the demonstrations now include a wider coalition frustrated by economic hardship and the government’s perceived shift toward corporate interests.
