A killing in the quiet Japanese town of Kaminokawa has raised concern about new criminal networks that recruit young and vulnerable people online. Police say four 16-year-old boys broke into the home of 69-year-old farmer Eiko Tomiyama, killing her and injuring her two sons.
Authorities are investigating whether the teenagers were hired by a roaming crime group known as tokuryu. These groups often use social media and encrypted apps to lure students or unemployed people with promises of easy, high-paying work, then pressure them into robberies, fraud, assaults, and other crimes.
The attack has unsettled residents in a town known for its peaceful rural life. Many locals said they are now locking doors and watching one another more closely, while national officials say dismantling tokuryu networks has become a government priority.
