May 25th, 2026 - Britain Endures First Heat Wave of the Year as Temperatures Near Record Levels
Large parts of Britain experienced their first official heat wave of the year as temperatures climbed well above normal levels for late May. Forecasters warned that some areas could reach 35 degrees Celsius, potentially breaking the country’s all time May temperature record of 32.8 degrees Celsius, which was set in 1944.
The unusually hot weather has been most intense across England and Wales, with several locations meeting the country’s official heat wave criteria after recording three consecutive days above local temperature thresholds. Health officials issued an amber heat alert across much of England, warning that the conditions could pose risks to older adults and people with underlying health conditions.
Britain is part of a broader pattern of early season heat affecting western Europe, with record May temperatures also reported in countries including Spain, France, and Germany. While temperatures are expected to ease slightly later in the week, heat wave conditions may continue in southern parts of Britain for several more days.
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Sacrosanct (adj, SAK-roh-sankt) - Sacrosanct is a formal word that describes something too important and respected to be changed or criticized. It can also mean "most sacred or holy."
Example: While the family's new matriarch aimed to maintain the familiar traditions of the holidays, she did not consider the details of their celebration to be sacrosanct.
