May 27th, 2026 - Ghana Evacuates Citizens From South Africa Amid Rising Anti Immigrant Protests

Ghana has begun evacuating hundreds of its citizens from South Africa as anti immigrant protests intensify across the country. Ghanaian officials chartered flights to bring home citizens who say they no longer feel safe amid rising hostility and reports of attacks targeting foreign nationals. About 300 people returned on the first flight, with additional evacuations planned.

Many protesters in South Africa accuse undocumented immigrants of taking jobs and contributing to crime, while government officials insist the country is not experiencing xenophobic violence. Nevertheless, several African governments, including Ghana and Nigeria, have condemned attacks on their citizens and raised concerns through diplomatic channels.

The tensions come as South Africa continues to struggle with high unemployment and growing anti immigrant sentiment. Analysts say the current protests appear more organized than previous waves of unrest and warn that political pressures ahead of local elections could further inflame the situation.

Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Benevolent (adj, buh-NEV-uh-lunt) - Benevolent can describe someone or something that is kind and generous or something that is organized for the purpose of doing good.

Example: The event's reception was courtesy of a benevolent donor who's chosen to remain anonymous.
