Skywatchers across the Southern Hemisphere are getting a rare chance to observe a glowing blue green comet as it passes over countries including New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. The comet, known as C/2025 R3 PANSTARRS, was first discovered in 2025 and recently became visible in southern skies after previously appearing in the Northern Hemisphere. Astronomers say the comet likely originated in the distant Oort Cloud, a region of icy objects beyond Pluto at the edge of the solar system.
Experts describe the comet as a long period comet, meaning it could take roughly 170,000 years to return again. While many comets are discovered each year, only a small number can be seen with amateur telescopes or binoculars. Astronomers say the best viewing conditions will be in dark areas away from city lights, with the comet appearing as a faint glowing object near the constellation Orion before eventually fading from view for thousands of years.
