Passengers infected during a hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius have begun to be evacuated to hospitals in Europe as health officials work to contain the situation. According to authorities and the ship’s operator, three passengers have died and several others have become ill since the outbreak began in April. The virus involved is believed to be the Andes strain, a rare type of hantavirus capable of spreading between people through close and prolonged contact.
Medical evacuations have already taken place, including patients transported to the Netherlands and other European countries for treatment. Health agencies in multiple nations, including the United States, Britain, and South Africa, are monitoring passengers who were on board but currently show no symptoms. Officials say the overall public health risk remains low, though contact tracing and precautionary measures continue as the ship heads toward the Canary Islands.
Passengers remaining on the ship have adopted strict safety measures similar to those used during the Covid pandemic, including social distancing, mask wearing, and frequent sanitizing. Authorities are continuing investigations into how the outbreak began, with attention focused on a Dutch couple who may have contracted the virus during earlier travels in Argentina.
