Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed that those responsible for the deadly explosion in New Delhi, which killed eight people and injured more than a dozen, would be brought to justice. The blast, which struck near a busy subway station during rush hour, has shaken India’s capital and prompted investigators to consider the possibility of a terrorist attack. If confirmed, it would be the deadliest assault in the city in more than ten years, breaking a period of relative calm and security outside the volatile Kashmir region.
Mr. Modi, who was on an official visit to Bhutan, said he had been in constant contact with investigators throughout the night. “The conspirators behind this will not be spared,” he said, promising swift and decisive action. The prime minister’s comments came as New Delhi police and federal investigators began piecing together the events surrounding the explosion, which occurred in the Red Fort area, one of the oldest and most crowded parts of the capital. The attack, if proven deliberate, could further strain India’s already tense relationship with Pakistan.
In the past, India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of supporting militant groups responsible for attacks on Indian soil. After a terrorist strike earlier this year in Kashmir that killed 26 people, India responded with airstrikes targeting Pakistan-based terrorist camps. Following that episode, Mr. Modi’s government warned that any future attacks would be treated as “acts of war.” The use of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the current case — legislation reserved for terrorism investigations — has strengthened suspicions that Monday’s blast was a coordinated attack rather than an accident.
Home Minister Amit Shah visited the scene of the explosion on Monday night and convened an emergency meeting with top security officials the next morning. The National Investigation Agency, India’s top counterterrorism body, has now taken charge of the probe. Investigators are conducting forensic tests on debris and vehicle fragments from the site, while the police examine possible connections to a recently dismantled terror network linked to the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammed. That group has a long history of targeting Indian civilians and security forces.
Earlier in the day, police had announced the arrest of several suspects in connection with the network, which they said was planning coordinated bombings across multiple Indian cities. The suspects, including several medical professionals, were found with more than 6,000 pounds of explosive materials, electronic circuits, and remote controls. Authorities are now investigating whether one of the group’s members drove the vehicle that detonated in New Delhi, though officials have not confirmed any direct link.
Witnesses described the explosion as sudden and devastating. “It was earthshaking,” said Leeladhar Vishvkarma, a cook who had just arrived in Delhi from Madhya Pradesh in search of work. “After the main blast, some smaller blasts took place in other vehicles. People died inside and outside the cars.” Rescue teams and security forces rushed to the scene, cordoning off the area as ambulances carried away the wounded and families of victims gathered outside hospitals in shock and grief.
The explosion has rattled the nation and reignited concerns about urban security. For many Indians, the attack is a grim reminder of the country’s vulnerability to terrorism and the continuing threat from groups operating across its borders. Prime Minister Modi’s pledge to “leave no conspirator unpunished” reflects his government’s commitment to a strong national security posture. As investigators work to uncover who was behind the bombing, India’s message to those who target its people is clear: the country will respond with force, unity, and determination.
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster) - Doughty (adj, DOW-tee) - Doughty is a word with an old-fashioned flair used to describe someone who is brave, strong, and determined.
Example: The monument celebrates the doughty townspeople who fended off invaders centuries ago.
