Authorities in Denmark temporarily closed several airports, including a facility used by the military, after unidentified drones were detected overnight. A government official described the drone activity as an effort to instill fear across the country. Aalborg Airport, serving both commercial and military flights, was shut down for several hours, while Billund Airport, Denmark’s second-largest, also briefly closed following unverified drone reports. Drones were further spotted near two southern airports and an air base that houses some of Denmark’s fighter jets.

The origin and operators of the drones remain unclear, but the incidents come amid heightened tensions in Europe. Recently, Russian aircraft entered the airspace of Poland, Estonia, and Romania. European officials and analysts have warned that such provocations—classified as hybrid or gray-zone warfare—may be aimed at destabilizing and antagonizing countries.

Earlier in the week, similar drone sightings forced Copenhagen Airport, Denmark’s largest, to close. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the incident as the “most serious attack so far” on critical national infrastructure, noting that Russian involvement could not be ruled out. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that it was too early to assign blame but confirmed that the alliance was taking the situation very seriously, and he communicated with Ms. Frederiksen again on Thursday.

The Kremlin denied any involvement, calling the Copenhagen incident a “staged provocation.” Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen acknowledged that while no conclusive evidence links Russia to the latest drone sightings, it could not be excluded given the “current security situation in Europe.” He noted that the attacks did not pose an immediate military threat but demonstrated Denmark’s vulnerability to hybrid warfare and infrastructure sabotage. Mr. Poulsen described the operation as systematic, with coordinated navigation across multiple locations, suggesting the involvement of a professional actor.

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard added that the intent behind such drone activity was to create fear and division among the population. Mr. Poulsen said Denmark was consulting with NATO allies and considering invoking Article 4 of the alliance’s treaty, which allows a member state to initiate formal discussions about threats to national security. Poland invoked the article recently after over 20 Russian drones crossed into its airspace on September 9 and 10.

Danish authorities are collaborating with the Danish Security and Intelligence Service and the armed forces to investigate the incidents. The drone sightings precede a European defense ministers’ meeting to discuss the growing use of drones as potential weapons of war. Mr. Poulsen will attend, and next month, European leaders are expected to convene in Copenhagen to explore ways to strengthen mutual defense and reinforce support for Ukraine.

Experts say the incidents highlight Denmark’s vulnerability to covert attacks targeting the economy, infrastructure, and public perception. Flemming Splidsboel Hansen, a researcher on hybrid warfare and post-Soviet Russia, noted that Russia is testing the limits of how far it can push European nations without immediate consequences, exploiting a perceived “opportunity space” as U.S. attention shifts inward. Drone threats near airports have been increasing worldwide, with notable incidents at Gatwick Airport in London in December 2018 and at Newark Liberty International Airport the following month, underscoring the growing challenge of managing aerial security.
