Thousands of Brazilians filled the streets on Sunday, the nation’s Independence Day, in a series of competing political protests. The demonstrations marked the start of a tense week that is expected to end with the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Across cities, people gathered peacefully, expressing sharply divided views on the country’s political future.

Supporters of Bolsonaro waved Brazilian and American flags, protesting his criminal prosecution over allegations that he tried to cling to power after losing the 2022 election. On the other side, left-leaning demonstrators demanded Bolsonaro’s imprisonment and criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempts to protect him. The dueling rallies highlighted the deep political polarization in Brazil.

By mid-afternoon, aerial images showed Bolsonaro’s supporters significantly outnumbering protesters on the left. Despite his ongoing legal troubles, the former president continues to wield substantial influence in Brazilian politics. Yet analysts question whether these demonstrations will have any impact on his impending legal fate.

Brazil’s Supreme Court is widely expected to convict Bolsonaro on charges of attempting a coup. The former leader could face more than 40 years in prison. Meanwhile, Trump has tried to pressure Brazilian authorities to drop the charges, using tariffs and sanctions on the court overseeing the case. These efforts, however, have largely backfired, boosting support for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro’s leftist rival.

The protests also spotlighted a separate political battle: Congress is debating whether to grant amnesty to Bolsonaro and other members of his movement for actions taken after the 2022 election. Hundreds of participants in a failed military coup attempt are currently serving prison sentences. Lawmakers are trying to craft legislation that could shield Bolsonaro from prison while barring him from future office.

At Sunday’s rallies, the focus was largely on amnesty. Bolsonaro supporters expressed disappointment over the expected conviction and placed their hopes on political maneuvers to protect him. Meanwhile, Lula’s supporters called for a conviction and criticized U.S. interference in Brazil’s internal affairs, warning against any legislation that could undermine justice.

The mood at the pro-Bolsonaro demonstrations was both celebratory and defiant. Vendors sold food and drinks, while political figures, including Bolsonaro’s sons, delivered fiery speeches against the Supreme Court. Supporters praised the United States and Trump, despite Bolsonaro being barred from holding office until 2030. In contrast, anti-Bolsonaro protesters rallied for democracy, warning that amnesty would repeat the historical mistakes of Brazil’s dictatorship era. Both sides prepared for what many see as a defining week in the nation’s political future.
