At the first Shield of the Americas summit held in Florida on Saturday, President Trump announced the creation of a new regional security alliance aimed at defeating drug cartels across the Western Hemisphere. The initiative, called the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition, will bring together Latin American and Caribbean nations to coordinate military and intelligence efforts against powerful trafficking organizations.
Speaking at the Trump National Doral Miami resort, President Trump said the coalition would serve as a powerful military partnership dedicated to dismantling criminal networks that have fueled violence, corruption, and drug trafficking throughout the region. “This brand-new military coalition will eradicate the criminal cartels plaguing our region,” Trump said, emphasizing that the United States is prepared to take decisive action.
President Trump told the assembled leaders that American forces are already intensifying operations against trafficking groups. “We’re knocking the hell out of them where we can, and we’re going to go heavier,” he said, urging partner nations to share intelligence that can help target cartel leadership and infrastructure. “We need your help. Just tell us where they are.”
The summit brought together leaders from 12 Latin American and Caribbean nations along with senior officials from the Trump administration. In total, 17 countries have committed to joining the coalition, marking one of the largest coordinated security partnerships in the region in decades. The meeting took place as the United States is simultaneously confronting rising tensions in the Middle East, highlighting the administration’s focus on strengthening American leadership globally.
Several of Trump’s closest regional allies attended the summit, including Argentine President Javier Milei and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, both strong advocates of tough law-and-order policies. Leaders from Bolivia, Costa Rica, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago were also present, signaling growing support for the coalition’s mission.
Top members of the Trump administration were also in attendance, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller. Officials said the coalition will aggressively target organized crime networks that move drugs across borders and destabilize governments throughout the hemisphere.
President Trump compared the effort to the international coalition that defeated ISIS in the Middle East, arguing that similar unity and determination are needed to confront cartel violence closer to home. By strengthening partnerships with allied governments, the administration hopes to dismantle trafficking routes, weaken cartel influence, and restore security throughout the Americas.
